Getting Married in Nicaragua: Civil Marriage Documentation Guide

Planning to get married in Nicaragua? Here are the legal requirements to register a civil marriage in the country:

For U.S. Citizens (or Foreign Nationals):

  1. Copy of your valid U.S. passport with the most recent Nicaraguan entry stamp.
  2. Original and copy of your divorce certificate (if applicable) and your personal details (full name, age, occupation, nationality, etc.).
  3. Original and copy of the bride’s birth certificate.
  4. Copy of the bride’s Nicaraguan identity card (Cédula) and her personal details.
  5. Education level of both the groom and the bride.
  6. Certificate of single status or divorce certificate (as applicable). For Nicaraguan nationals, a certificate of singleness is required. For foreigners, a divorce certificate or judicial decree is required if previously married.
  7. Copy of the identity cards (Cédulas) of two witnesses (they may be relatives), along with their full personal information.

Important Notes:

  • Both parties must be at least 18 years old to legally marry in Nicaragua.
  • If both parties are foreigners, the following documents are required:
    • Valid and current passport
    • Birth certificate
    • Nicaraguan Residence Card (if applicable)
    • Divorce certificate or court judgment (if previously married)
